Cupping

Using special cups to create suction, stagnation is moved out of skin and muscles, reducing pain and encouraging the movement of fresh blood into compromised areas of the body.

How Does Cupping Work?

In this process, a glass or plastic cup is placed on the treatment area, and a pump is attached to draw out air and create a vacuum effect. The cup is placed over muscular areas that are tight, causing pain, and compromising blood flow. Cupping is most often applied to the back and shoulders, and is sometimes used on tight iliotibial bands (ITB), calves and forearms. Bony areas and ligaments do not have enough soft tissue to hold the suction and allow blood to flow rapidly.

Cupping therapy is often used in conjunction with acupuncture to assist with blood flow and increase movement and circulation. Cupping is recommended as a complementary therapy for back pain, headaches and migraines, knee pain, muscle, neck and shoulder pain, and sports injuries.

The Cupping Process

  • Dr. Danti will locate tight or tender areas corresponding to acupuncture points, on which to place the cups.

  • Air is withdrawn from the cups and they are left on for 5-25 minutes depending on the amount of stagnation present in the area and the patient’s comfort level. Some pain relief is felt while the cups are in place and relief continues after the cups are removed.

  • Red to purplish-black circles will mark the skin once the cups are removed. The area may remain tender for a few days, and the discoloration may last 1-2 weeks, but don’t worry it will disappear and leave no marks.
